Biggles Winning Goldmarket
Biggles Winning Goldmarket

Trainer Noel Doyle celebrated the New Year in spectacular style after landing his third Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast with Biggles.

Biggles, ridden by Tim Bell,  lived up to his recent strong form kicking clear of runner-up Steel Zip to record a decisive 1-1/4 lengths win in the 1300-metre feature.

Startsmeup was a further half length back third.

Doyle, 69, has won the Goldmarket twice previously with Beau Zephyr in 1988 and Atlantic Crossing who downed Brave Warrior in 1995.

Doyle has had a few health problems in recent months and was only discharged from hospital last week.

"I was in hospital for four days last week with a bladder and blood infection," Doyle said.

"This is a great thrill and I love it when plans like this come off."

Biggles went into the Goldmarket with a win and two seconds from his past three starts.

"He got beaten twice at the mile in the Recognition Stakes and Brisbane Handicap after winning over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm in November," Doyle said.

"I was thinking about going to the Bernborough Handicap or even taking him to Sydney for the Villiers but I decided it was too risky with the Magic Millions Cup coming up.

"I'm pretty sure he would have suffered from burn out and would have had nothing left for the Magic Millions Cup had he run in either of those races."

Doyle believes Biggles, who took his record  to six wins from 18 starts, is a genuine contender for the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on his home track on Saturday week.

Long term, Doyle is confident Biggles can measure up to the Brisbane winter carnival.

"I'm not sure whether he's up to a Group One but I'd love to be proved wrong," he said.

"But I've got no doubt he's up to Group Two and Group Three company."

Earlier an emotional apprentice Tegan Harrison dedicated her Bat Out Of Hell win on All That to her close friend Ashley Mundy.

Mundy died in a race fall in New Zealand on Sunday but rode regularly at the Gold Coast.

"I actually felt privileged going around to the gates to be the only girl in the race," Harrison said.

"I felt I was riding for all of us after what happened to Ashlee on the weekend.

"They always refer to this horse as a `girl's horse' because he's never done any good for the blokes so I was trying to do it for the girls.

"I'm overwhelmed that it all worked out."
